Best Buy offers new HP TouchPad bundle deal

Best Buy announced today that it will be offering a new deal on the HP TouchPad starting on November 1. The tablet was originally priced $599 at launch and went for $99 during a short fire sale period at HP and select retailers, but has since gone back to an average price under $300. Starting next month, Best Buy will price the 32GB TouchPad for $149.99 when purchased with an HP or Compaq laptop, desktop, or all-in-one computer.

The HP TouchPad tablet sold out quickly during the fire sale following the announcement that it would be discontinued back in August. The $99 fire sale TouchPad tablets proved so popular that HP scheduled another production run of the tablets to fulfill backorders. It’s hard to say if this new Best Buy deal, pricing them at $149.99 with the requirement of an additional computer purchase, would prove to be as hot an item, but we also didn’t expect it the first time around.

When HP first announced discontinuing WebOS hardware, including the Veer, Pre3, and TouchPad, it had insisted that it would continue support and development of the WebOS software. But following the announcement this week that HP has reversed plans to spin off its PC business, there are new reports that the WebOS software division will soon be completely shutdown. The changes have come after Meg Whitman became HP’s new CEO, replacing Leo Apotheker after his short 11 month stint that was riddled with communication missteps.

Samsung has reiterated plans to launch smartphones using flexible displays next year, with twistable tablets and other devices following on. “The flexible display, we are looking to introduce sometime in 2012, hopefully the earlier part” Samsung spokesperson Robert Yi confirmed during the company’s financial results call, PC World reports, going on to detail that “the application probably will start from the handset side.”

Samsung’s intention to use flexible screens in 2012 was first revealed back in June, when the company confirmed that it would begin mass production of the OLED panels next year. The actual displays themselves have been floating around in prototype form since 2010, with Samsung showing off a variety of concepts that could potentially benefit from the technology. More recently, the company revealed a foldable phone/MID prototype that squeezed an AMOLED panel into a clamshell casing.

It’s unclear, at this stage, what format Samsung’s devices will take. Clamshells are perhaps the most likely candidates, given that it would allow the Korean firm to pack a larger display into a smaller form-factor. Kyocera attempted to maximize Android screen real-estate with its dual-display Echo, but that was forced to use two solid panels: Samsung’s approach could mean a single, seamless screen ideal for video and browsing.

Nokia, meanwhile, demonstrated a flexible prototype phone of its own at Nokia World earlier this week. The concept, shown in our video below, pairs a twistable display with a rubberized case, allowing navigation by physically bending the handset. However, flexible battery, circuitboard and other components will have to come up to speed before the prototype could spawn a commercial design.

Intel is expected to launch two new Xeon E5 subfamilies of processors in early 2012 with the E5-1600 and the E5-2600, the latter of which already has its specs and pricing leaked. CPU-World published a list showing the details on every E5-2600 model, revealing what specs we might expect to find with upcoming systems, such as Apple’s early 2012 Mac Pros.

Starting form the bottom of the series is a quad-core 1.8Ghz Xeon with 10MB of level 3 cache and no Hyperthreading at a $202 bulk price point. At the high-end, it offers 1.8GHz to 3.1GHz eight-core processors with Hyperthreading, and 20MB of cache, 70W to 150W power use for a price ranging from $1,106 to $2,057. This series has only one dual-core chip with the E5-2643 that’s clocked at 3.3GHz and sports 5MB of level 3 cache, Hyperthreading, and 80W power usage, but is priced at $884.

This new lineup could boost the number of cores on systems across the board, especially on Apple’s next-gen Mac Pros, which are expected to get refreshed in early 2012. The lower end dual-core model would certainly benefit from the new series, such as with the E5-2620, which would boost it up to 6 cores while maintaining about the same pricing. The lower-end single-core Mac Pro models may use Intel’s E5-1600 series processors that’s also scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2012.
